A Festschrift for Adenike Akinjobi

Adenike Adebola Akinjobi, a Professor of English Phonology at the Department
of English, University of Ibadan and one of the foremost Nigerian English
phonologists has, for more than three decades now, passionately devoted
herself to advancing the course of Nigerian English phonology, good
pronunciation and appropriate use of the English language via her academic
books, literary texts, various social media academic engagements and
publications which have appeared in reputable national and high-impact
international journals. This MacArthur Staff Training Programme awardee and
Visiting Scholar to the Department of Linguistics, Harvard University,
Cambridge MA, USA has over the years built her research activities around
Phonetics and Phonology, Sociolinguistics and Nigerian English usage.
Specifically, her phonological inquiries focus on the English suprasegmentals
with emphasis on instrumental analysis. As Chairperson, University of Ibadan
English Language Clinic Project (a unit of the University saddled with the
responsibility of addressing the deteriorating state of English in Nigeria),
Professor Adenike Akinjobi has been a mentor and model to numerous linguists
and English language enthusiasts who participate in the quarterly lecture
series of the unit and drink from her linguistic cistern on Facebook. This
linguistic icon and academic amazon will clock 55 in April, 2020. Therefore,
in celebrating her contribution to and impact on the academia, and the wider
community of English users in Nigeria, a festschrift titled: Phonetics,
Phonology and Sociolinguistics in the Nigerian Context is being proposed.
Scholars are hereby invited to submit theoretical or empirical papers related
to her research interests and the proposed title as follows:

1. The interface of Phonetics, Phonology and Sociolinguistics in Nigeria
2. Emerging trends in the English pronunciation of Nigerians
3. Vowel reduction and suffixation in different sub-varieties of Nigerian
English
4. Stress assignment in the Outer Circle
5. Nigerian English Rhythm: Rhythm word or dictionary word?
6. Towards an acceptable theory of the Rhythm of Nigerian English
7. Contemporary issues in Nigerian English intonation
8. The emergence of social variation in Nigerian English
9. Emerging trends in the use of English on social media in Nigeria
10. Instrumental analysis in phonetics and phonology
11. Applicability of traditional phonological theories to ESL research
12. English pronunciation and appropriate models in Nigeria
13. Received Pronunciation and modelling issues in Nigeria
14. The national language question
15. Deteriorating use of English in Nigeria: E-learning to the rescue?

Contributions should not be more than 7,000 words, in 12-point Times New Roman
font, and typed double-spaced. References must conform to the 6th edition of
the APA style. The article, with an abstract of about 250 words and a short
autobiography of the author, should be sent electronically to the following
