Job Description:
As a Linguist you will collaborate with researchers and engineers by providing
linguistic expertise and direction for NLP projects and systems. You will work
closely with the researchers and engineers to train and/or evaluate NLP and
dialogue systems and propose solutions. You will also contribute to and
monitor data acquisition and curation; you will develop quality control
methodology, experiments and improvements in our ability to understand and
generate natural language. You will be providing linguistic analysis,
annotations and reviews for data for language variants including but not
limited to Nigerian and Ghanaen English. You will also contribute to a number
of other tasks to improve natural language understanding and speech
processing.
This also includes:
- Drafting linguistic guidelines
- Annotating and reviewing texts according to linguistic guidelines
- Labeling text with semantic, syntactic and morphological features
- Annotating lexicon entries according to guidelines
- Creating verbalisation rules, such as expanding URLs, email addresses,
numbers
- Creating annotation conventions
- Providing expertise on pronunciation and phonotactics
- Working with QA tools according to given guidelines and using in-house tools
Requirements:
- A native-level speaker of at least one of the regional languages and/or
Nigerian English and fluent in English
- Advanced degree in Linguistics, Computational Linguistics or equivalent
experience / qualification, with knowledge of semantics, syntax, morphology
and/or lexicography a plus
- Keen ear for phonetic nuances and attention to detail; knowledge of the
language’s phonology
- Ability to quickly grasp technical concepts; learn in-house tools
- Interest in technology and computer-literate
- Interest in natural language processing, linguistics, linguistic resources
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
Project Duration:
Approximately 3 months (with potential extension), starting as soon as
possible. This is not a permanent position but a full-time contract position.
