The two- day conference entitled Globalization, Language, Literature and the
Humanities is being proposed to honour Mnguember Vicky Sylvester, Professor of
Literature and Gender Studies at the Department of English, University of
Abuja-Nigeria. The proposed conference is a scholarly forum to give room for
scholars in Globalization, Language, Literature and the Humanities to
interrogate current trends in these research areas around Prof. Mnguember
Vicky Sylvester’s teaching and research at the university level which has
spanned a little more than three decades.
Prof. Mnguember Vicky Sylvester is a playwright and highly prolific scholar
whose numerous articles have appeared in peer-reviewed journals both locally
and internationally. She is the author of 12 books with 5 on fiction; editor
of about 12 books, and has made more than 31 conference presentations
nationally and internationally. Also, Prof. Sylvester has contributed more
than 11 chapters to books on literature (all genres), gender studies, and
entrepreneurship.
As a dynamic and multifaceted phenomenon, globalisation portends varying
degree of ecstasy to the human race. Globalization is both complex and
contradictory. While some trace it to the dawn of human civilization, others
locate its origin in recent history. Regardless of its conception whether as a
practical reality or a myth, globalization has registered so much in both
popular consciousness as in academic discourse. We shall approach
globalisation broadly and in its many contemporary manifestations, especially
its ramification in the humanities and social science. Regardless of its
contentious meaning and amorphous contour, globalisation, we argue, provides a
vivid elucidation into contemporary human society and culture. Therefore,
contributions are invited from interested scholars considering the crisis
around the spheres of Globalization, Language, Literature and the Humanities.
The output from the conference will be published in a book which will attempt
to interrogate the nexus between globalisation, gender inclusiveness, social
entrepreneurship, skill development, arts, and science in order to theorise
emerging global practices and challenges in the world system.
