Description:
A position as Postdoctoral Fellow in English linguistics and multilingualism
is available at the Department of Teacher Education at the Norwegian
University of Science and Technology. The post is a fixed-term position for
three years.
The successful candidate will be employed on the Research Council of
Norway-funded project Acquisition of English in the multilingual classroom
from 1 July 2018 for three years.
The project’s primary objective is to examine acquisition of English by
multilingual language learners in Norwegian schools. The secondary objectives
include examining the acquisition patterns of English L3 in Norwegian
classrooms. The main focus will be on language awareness and language
development, in particular the contrastive/comparative elements between the
learners' L1 and English for both spoken and written language at different age
groups/levels of proficiency. We will also define ‘standards’ or levels of
what should be expected at the different levels of proficiency/ages to fulfil
the learning outcomes in the curriculum for English. We will examine teachers
and learners’ cognitive awareness of the language learning process and we will
examine how students on the Master programme in English education best can
take part in professional development and carry out their own research
projects in multilingual classrooms.
The Postdoctoral Fellow will be responsible for the following tasks:
- Collect and analyse data that consist of observations and recordings of
classroom interaction between students and teacher, and students’ written
texts
- Carry out and analyse interviews with teachers
- Carry out some transcription and coding of audio data
- Present project results at conferences and co-author reports and
publications
Required Qualifications:
- A Norwegian PhD or a foreign PhD approved as equivalent to a Norwegian PhD
in a relevant field
- Fluent oral and written communication skills in English
Desired qualifications:
- Proficiency in Norwegian and another language in addition to English
- Research experience from working with multilingual learners of English
The applications should include:
- A statement including an explanation of how your research interests and
background would fit with the position
- Full list of publications
- Relevant sample publications (maximum 5)
- CV with information about education and previous research experience
- Authorized documentation of certificates, diplomas and other records of
study (unauthorized documentation will not be accepted)
- Name and contact information of at least two academic references
Co-authored publications work will be evaluated. If it is difficult to
identify the contributions from individuals in a joint piece of work,
applicants should enclose a short descriptive summary of what he/she
contributed to the work.
Short-listed candidates may be invited for an interview at NTNU.
