Celebrating 90 Years of the English Department at the Faculty of Philology,
University of Belgrade
May 30 – June 1 2019

The English Department at the Faculty of Philology, University of Belgrade,
Serbia is pleased to announce its sixth international conference on English
language, literature and culture studies. For us, the year 2019 will be a year
of celebrations; it is with great pride that we will be marking two great
anniversaries – 90 years from the founding of our English Department and 135
years since English was first taught at the Velika škola (Great School) in
Belgrade. The aim of this special international conference will be to mark
these two important historical events by promoting an exchange of ideas across
different areas and theoretical frameworks of English linguistics and
anglophone literary/cultural studies throughout a broad academic community.
The list of plenary speakers will include:
- Raymond Gibbs (Distinguished Professor, University of California, Santa
Cruz, CA, USA)
- Rochelle Lieber (University of New Hampshire, Durham, NH, USA)
- Raluca Radulescu (Professor of Medieval Literature, School of English
Literature, University of Bangor, UK)
The official language of the conference is English.
Conference Fee:
The early bird conference fee is 80 Euros through April 20th 2019. After this
deadline, the regular conference fee is 100 Euros. The fee includes:
- Conference pack
- Coffee break refreshments
A conference dinner is planned. The time and venue will be announced at a
later date.
PhD students will be allowed a discounted conference fee of 40 Euros through
April 20th 2019 or 50 Euros after this date.

Call for Papers:
We invite proposals for papers and posters addressing diverse issues within
the very broad theme of the conference – English Language, Literature and
Culture Studies – in the following fields:
Theoretical Linguistics
Applied Linguistics with Particular Emphasis on ESL/EFL Language Pedagogy
Literature Studies
Culture Studies
Translation/Interpreting Studies
The official language of the conference is English.
Each paper will be allotted 20 minutes (15 minutes for presentation and 5
minutes for discussion).
A selection of papers will be published after the conference. The specifics on
the type and profile of publications will be announced in the Second Call for
Papers.
Abstract Submission Guidelines:
Abstracts should be no longer than 300 words (excluding references) and should
be sent via e-mail (as Word 1997-2003 attachments) to: bells90 at fil.bg.ac.rs
Abstracts should be fully anonymous (title of the paper + abstract +
references).
The following information should be specified in the body of the e-mail:
(1) Title of the paper/poster
(2) Name of the author(s)
(3) Affiliation of the author(s)
(4) Key words
(5) E-mail address(es)
Important Dates:
Submission of abstracts for full paper presentations: January 15, 2019
Submission of thematic session proposals: January 15, 2019
Submission of abstracts for poster proposals: February 1, 2019
Notification of acceptance: February 20, 2019

Thematic Sessions:
Prospective participants are encouraged to submit thematic session proposals.
The proposals should include both the topic for the session and the name of
the individuals who will speak at the session. Proposals for thematic sessions
are due by January 15, 2019.
Poster Presentations:
To obtain a spot in the poster session, participants are invited to submit
poster proposals in the form of abstracts, the guidelines for which can be
found below. The abstracts will be included in the conference proceedings.
Details on displaying posters at the conference will be included in the Second
Call for Papers.
