Meeting Description:
The internationalization of higher education has given rise to multilingual
and multicultural universities throughout Europe and around the world. The
shift toward multilingual and plurilingual education presents both new
opportunities and new challenges. These trends especially give new prominence
to the role of language teaching and learning within higher education—in
particular to the role of teaching and learning Languages for Specific and
Academic Purposes.
Building upon the success of a series of four symposia on Teaching English for
Specific and Academic Purposes—which were co-organized by TESOL Italy and the
Faculty of Economics and Management at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano
(unibz)—the Language Centre at unibz is pleased to announce an international
symposium which will expand the discourse to Didaktik der Fachsprachen –
DaF/DaZ and Didattica dei linguaggi specialistici – Italiano L2/LS.
Unibz is widely recognized as the first trilingual university in Europe, with
English, German, and Italian serving as the mediums of instruction in most
degree programs. The city of Bozen-Bolzano is located in the trilingual
Province of South Tyrol, a border region where German, Italian, and Ladin
enjoy equal status as de jure official languages in local government, public
administration, and education. This makes unibz an ideal setting for sharing
and exploring current trends in LSP and LAP across linguistic, institutional,
and national boundaries.
