Subject: New M.A. ''Semiotics and Multimodal Communication''

The new Master's programme ''Semiotik und Multimodale Kommunikation''
(Semiotics and Multimodal Communication) starts in the fall of 2018 at the
University of Technology Chemnitz (primary teaching language is German). It is
the first Master's degree in Germany that combines linguistics, media studies,
and digital humanities. It offers a unique mixture of thorough theoretical
foundations covering many areas of contemporary communication and media, with
a modern methodology that includes corpus-based and experimental studies, and
practical perspectives on the analysis and design of multimodal media that are
directly relevant for careers in many professions.

The theoretical foundations are multimodality research and semiotics, two
closely linked research traditions that provide a common foundation for
investigating all processes of communication and meaning-making, and provide
the means for analysis and evaluation of media and design processes in many
areas.

The new Master's degree Semiotics and Multimodal Communication combines media
studies with linguistics, literary studies and innovative approaches to
digital culture. The programme teaches traditional qualifications of the
humanities (such as learning to write scientific texts and present complex
arguments, to interpret complex multimodal artefacts, and to participate in
and evaluate contemporary discourses) with media studies approaches to print
media, digital media and internet-based communication.

Digital Humanities module: Additionally, a thorough introduction into the new
area of digital humanities is provided. Students will be qualified for a range
of professions in media design, public relations and marketing, cultural
institutions, publishing, as well as in research and academic careers.
Furthermore, it is one of only a few programmes in Germany that offers an
introduction into the digital humanities. Students learn about digital
editions, visualisation techniques, data repositories, licensing and open
access, and other fields. Digital humanities is a rapidly growing field that
offers up a number of career options in cultural institutions such as museums,
and archives, and libraries.
