Meeting Description:

6th Prescriptivism Conference: ‘Modelling Prescriptivism: Language,
Literature, and Speech Communities’.

We are pleased to announce that the 6th Prescriptivism Conference will be held
on 24-26 September 2020 at the University of Vigo (Spain), organised by
members of the LVTC (Language Variation and Textual Categorisation) research
group at the University of Vigo.

Five previous highly successful conferences in this series have demonstrated
the value of studying prescriptivism, as scholars from a variety of language
traditions and approaches have garnered valuable insights into prescriptivism
and standardisation in language. Following Sheffield (2003), Ragusa (2006),
Toronto (2009), Leiden (2013), and Park City, Utah (2017), the theme of the
next conference in Vigo (2020) will be ‘Modelling Prescriptivism: Language,
Literature, and Speech Communities’.

We thus invite papers on any aspect of prescriptivism in any of these three
strands, approaching the subject from ideology and methodology, diachrony and
synchrony. The conference language will be English, but we will welcome papers
focused on English and New/Word Englishes, as well as other official and/or
minority languages. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

- prescriptivism within standardisation
- the history of prescriptivism and standardisation
- mechanisms of prescriptivism
- linguistic approaches to prescriptivism
- literary approaches to prescriptivism
- prescriptivism in literature
- prescriptivism and enregisterment
- prescriptivism in new varieties of English
- prescriptivism and World Englishes
- prescriptivism in speech communities
- prescriptivism and nationalism
- language planning

The following plenary speakers have confirmed their participation:

- Prof. Joan C. Beal (University of Sheffield, UK)
- Prof. Kate Burridge (Monash University, Australia)
- Prof. Don Chapman (Brigham Young University, Utah)

The event will run over three days with non-parallel sessions. Individual
papers, round tables and posters will be welcome. The official Call for Papers
and further particulars will be sent out in early 2020.

There are plans for publishing a peer-reviewed selection of papers from the
conference, most likely in thematically coherent volumes which will be
submitted for the consideration of international publishers.
