Subject: Call for Chapter Proposals

Contributions are invited for an edited volume with a working title of
''Discourses of the Ukrainian Crisis''. The book aims to elucidate discursive
practices prompted by the situation of crisis and investigate the trends in
language aggression, evaluation, persuasion, and other elements of conflict
communication from a discourse-analytical perspective. The discussion is
expected to advance the understanding of the relationship between language,
discourse, and society through highlighting the complex interrelation of
linguistic and extra-linguistic phenomena in the time of crisis and through
attention to the active and deliberate communicative activity of the discourse
participants.

Chapter submissions must be unpublished original works that are not currently
under review, and they may focus on a variety of topics, including but not
limited to:

- Conflict and aggression
- Power, oppression, or legitimation
- Identity construction and management
- Humor in the time of crisis
- Media and its role in shaping discourses of crisis
- Narratives of political parties, institutions, or social movements
- Military action narratives
- Gender in crisis discourse
- Migration, integration, and discrimination
- History and memory
- Contested categorization, contested framing
- Nation, nationalism, and populism
- Health and mental health reflected in discourse

A range of theoretical and analytical perspectives are welcome, but please
note that the project is expected to rely on authentic discourse data in the
public sphere, especially in informal media, such as social networks, as well
as in traditional media. Thus, corpus-assisted discourse studies are
particularly welcome. Chapters should be written in English (Russian or
Ukrainian may be considered), but they should focus on Russian, Ukrainian, or
other languages spoken in Ukraine. Recommended length is 8000 words including
references.

An extended abstract of approximately 500 words (excluding references) should
be sent to the editor Dr. Natalia Knoblock (nlknoblo at svsu.edu) as an MS Word
(.doc or .docx) attachment by July 15, 2018, and should provide the following
information:

- Keywords
- The topic and outline of your chapter
- The data analyzed in the chapter
- The methods used
- Preliminary results
- How your chapter will contribute to the field

After the abstract and references, please add a short biographical note (50
words or less) about the contributor(s).

The book is under contract with a large international publisher, and the
project is expected to proceed fairly quickly. The key dates are:

July 15, 2018: abstract submission
July 31, 2018: notification of acceptance
Nov. 31, 2018: first draft of chapter due
Feb. 31, 2019: first draft reviews due
May 31, 2019: final chapter due
