Meeting Description:

Institute of English at the University of Silesia in Katowice, Poland, has the
pleasure to announce the 1st International Conference titled Dimensions of
Business Language and Culture

The aim of the conference is to present, exchange, and discuss the results of
academic research in the sphere of business language and culture as well as
the work experience of pedagogical staff and practitioners concerned with the
contemporary business. It is an opportunity to look at various aspects of the
world of business presented in the form of papers and workshops.

In order to understand the complex nature of the contemporary business
environment, it is crucial to look at it from the point of view of several
disciplines, hence we welcome contributions from the authors working in such
fields as applied linguistics, sociology, psychology, economics, cultural
studies, and methodology. In the globalized world, where different fields of
science merge and have an impact on one another, such an approach will enable
us to study multiple discourses shaping the world, with language and culture
being the vehicle which influences them all.

Business practices are influenced by deeply held cultural attitudes.
Understanding and respecting them can be critical to success in both domestic
and international business. The elements pertaining to the numerous
definitions of culture are usually language, religion, art, different customs
and habits, variety of traditions, behaviour, and values. Moreover, culture
touches upon technology, knowledge and work patterns, which finds its
expression in various genres and registers that are characteristic of the
language of business. Therefore, the topics we propose are manifold and can be
investigated at various levels, from a mono or cross-cultural perspective.
