Summer School on Intonation and Word Order - Theoretical and Empirical Approaches
Host Institution: Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz
Coordinating Institution: Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz

Dates: 17-Sep-2018 - 21-Sep-2018
Location: Graz, Austria
Focus: The interpretation of sentences depends on word order and intonation. Intonation and word order may, for instance, indicate which part of an assertation is the new or important information, which question a sentence answers, or whether there is a contrast to other expressions on the context. Moreover, there are complex interaction patterns between word order and intonation: not every constituent of a sentence may be focused, not every word order is compatible with every intonation pattern. Also, the context as well as the speaker’s intentions affect word order and intonation. The aim of the summer school is to introduce participants to the basics of theoretical and empirical work on intonation and word order, but also discover recent approaches and research tendencies in the area. The summer school is supposed to form the foundations for the participants’ own successful research (MA or PhD theses) on the topic.
