Meeting Description:
The school of Georgian terminology has a long history and a rich
terminological heritage (church and theological, philosophical, grammatical,
mathematical and other types of Georgian terminology dates back to the VII-X
centuries). However, recently in almost every branch of science in Georgia,
terminological diversity has ballooned, as loan words for technology,
theoretical concepts, and newly discovered phenomena enter the Georgian
language. With scientific terms being rapidly borrowed from other languages,
the development of Georgian translation equivalents has become a pressing need
to further the development of sciences in the Georgian academe.
In order to solve this problem, the Department of Scientific Terminology and
Bilingual Dictionaries of Arnold Chikobava Institute of Linguistics at TSU has
since 2013 organized a local annual conference “Scientific Terminology,” and
publishes the scientific journal, “Terminological Issues”. Recently, this
department founded the Vukol Beridze Association of Terminology of Georgia.
This association has already been accepted as a member of the European
Association for Terminology (EAFT).
This year, we are extending the format of our annual conference by expanding
to an international audience. Vukol Beridze Association of Terminology of
Georgia and TSU Arnold Chikobava Institute of Linguists welcomes participants
to the first international “Terminology - Heritage and Modernity” conference
on September 14-16, 2018 (in Tbilisi, Georgia).
We are pleased to invite scholars who work on terminological development and
translation issues and all interested participants.
