Meeting Description:
We would like to cordially invite you to the second edition of the
International Conference on Child Foreign/Second Language Learning. This time
the scope of the conference will be extended to all children learning
additional languages, both foreign, second and other. Acquiring foreign/second
languages in childhood is becoming a widespread phenomenon. This may be the
result of recommendations in language policies, the strive for social
advancement, or migration.
Despite starting early, not all children master second languages to the same
extent. Different learning contexts result in variability in learning outcomes
and learning routes. Therefore in this conference we would like to take a
closer look at factors that account for variability in children’s foreign and
second language achievements. Different language learning experiences and
abilities of children in one class also cause a challenge for teachers who
have to cope with the problem of heterogeneity.
Additionally, our conference is also to serve as a response to recent
educational reform in Poland (2017), which has prolonged the length of primary
school from 6 to 8 grades (i.e. from age 7 to 14/15). Such a long period
within one institution may enable longitudinal research on young learners.
The goal of the conference is twofold:
Firstly, we would like to scrutinise the vagaries of early language learning
with a view to identifying factors that impact final attainment of early
starters in a foreign language.
Secondly, we would like to find ways of dealing with classes of students with
varied learning experiences, varied learning abilities and educational needs.
The following speakers have agreed to deliver plenary talks (in alphabetical
order):
Prof. Adriana Biedroń (Pomeranian Academy in Słupsk, Poland)
Prof. Jelena Mihaljevic Djigunovic (Univeristy of Zagreb, Croatia)
Prof. Carmen Muñoz (University of Barcelona, Spain)
Prof. Victoria Murphy (School of Education, Oxford University, UK)
Prof. Mirosław Pawlak (Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań; State University of
Applied Sciences in Konin, Poland)
Call for Papers:
The conference is intended for all those interested in the teaching and
learning of foreign languages at an early age, both pre-primary and primary
(up to around 14 years of age). We welcome theoretical papers, practical
presentations and workshops from researchers and practitioners, linguists, and
teacher educators.
Potential topics for conference presentations and workshops include, but are
not limited to:
- Early-learning foreign vs. second language acquisition: similarities and
differences
- Long-term results of early language contacts
- Factors affecting final outcomes in FLL:
= cognitive (working memory capacity, learning strategies etc.)
= affective (motivation, self-concept, self-esteem, emotions etc.)
= social factors (language policy, family background, socio-economic status)
- Pedagogical innovations in TEYL (CLIL, Story-based approach, ICT etc.)
- Teaching students with special educational needs (dyslexia, dysgraphia,
gifted children etc.)
- Migrant (EALs, ELLS) children (L2/L3 etc maintenance and attrition,
identity preservation, adaptation to school, etc.)
- Crosslinguistic transfer ( L1/L2, L2/L3); translanguaging
- Developing intercultural competence in learners and teachers
- Adaptation difficulties at transitions between educational stages
(pre-primary/primary, lower/upper – primary)
- Literacy development in L2/L3
- Assessment and evaluation
- Young learner teacher education and competencies
Each presentation will be allocated 30 minutes (ca. 20 minutes of presentation
+ 10 minutes for discussion), and each workshop will be allocated 45-60
minutes. The languages of the conference are English and Polish. However, if a
paper is going to be delivered in Polish, we kindly ask you to send an
abstract in English as well.
