Job Title: Postdoctoral Researcher

Specialty Areas: Cognitive Science; Phonetics; Phonology; Psycholinguistics; Speech perception
Description:
The School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences at the University
of Edinburgh is seeking to appoint a full-time postdoctoral research assistant
for a fixed-term period of 36 months. The position is to support the EVOTONE
project “The emergence and evolution of linguistic tone” funded by the
European Research Council. This project aims to explore our understanding of
how physiological, perceptual, and structural pressures interact to condition
the emergence of tone languages, and how tone systems subsequently evolve.
The post holder will be chiefly responsible for conducting the speech
perception studies associated with the project, including participant
recruitment, designing and running experiments and editing experiment code,
post-processing, analysis, write-up, and presentation.
Applications are invited from those with a PhD in psychology, cognitive
science, linguistics, or a related discipline, who have a strong track record
of research and publication in relevant areas (PhD pending and assumed
complete at time of appointment can be considered). Applicants with expertise
in speech production and perception, phonetic fieldwork, and/or computational
proficiency are especially encouraged to apply. Specific experience with
perceptual learning and phonetic imitation paradigms, statistical modelling,
and functional data analysis is highly desirable.
This is a full time (35 hours), fixed term post (36 months) beginning in
August 2019. Salary, commensurate with experience, is £33,199 - £39,609 per
annum (pro-rata). Funds for laboratory support (e.g., lab technicians and
research assistants) and conference/fieldwork travel are also available.
Closing Date: Tuesday 8th January 2019, 5pm GMT.
It is anticipated that interviews will be held March 2019.
