Linguistic Field(s): Applied Linguistics; Language Acquisition

Subject Language(s): Arabic, Standard (arb)

Meeting Description:

Interest in learning Arabic has grown from merely philological in the study of
Classical texts to involve using the modern language in communicating with
Arabic speakers and interacting with contemporary written and spoken texts.
Such changes in the field bring about new questions and challenges. Learning
Arabic as a Classical language means heavy emphasis on grammar and translation
as tools of academic inquiry. Many academic programs today are adapting to
training students on using a living language. Furthermore, increasing
European focus on proficiency-based language instruction poses a number of
challenges on academic programs.

The symposium serves as the seed for a European network of academics and
professionals interested in TAFL. It brings together an initially small group
of colleagues from the Netherlands, UK and Europe who are involved in the
field, together with colleagues from Egypt and Morocco who run graduate
programs in TAFL and study abroad programs. We will share research and
professional experience as course instructors, program coordinators,
(graduate) program chairs, and study abroad instructors.

Registration:

The symposium is open to all Foreign Language Professionals and academics.
There is no registration fee, but registration is required. To register for
attendance, send an email to lucis at hum.leidenuniv.nl with your name and
affiliation.

The organization of this symposium has been sponsored by the Leiden University
Fund/Dr. C.L. van Steeden Fonds, Leiden Institute for Area Studies, Leiden
University Centre for the Study of Islam and Society, Leiden University
Language Learning Resource Centre, Stichting Oosters Instituut, and Juynboll
Stichting.
