The successful candidate is expected to prepare, coordinate and teach new
courses in the Language and Society profile of the European Languages and
Cultures program, including French language instruction and courses on French
linguistics, to carry out a research program related to French linguistics and
to supervise undergraduate, graduate and PhD students in the field of
linguistics. The candidate is expected to develop new ideas in research and
education and acquire funding (independently or jointly with other colleagues)
for future research. While the area of specialization is open, preference will
be given to candidates who have a focus which fits within the
interdisciplinary program.

The selected candidate will work with other colleagues in the Chair of
Language and Society, organized within the European Languages and Cultures
program. The European Languages and Cultures program consists of an
interdisciplinary team of researchers collaborating with other programs in the
faculty and international guest-researchers. The team covers many areas of
linguistics and language studies.

The position will involve a teaching load of 60% (including administration)
and 40% research. The call is open to candidates from backgrounds in
linguistics or linguistic anthropology; the successful candidate should
demonstrate his or her ability to connect effectively to ongoing research
projects and contribute to the faculty’s excellence in teaching and research.

Qualifications:
Candidates for the position must have:
- A PhD in Linguistics or a closely related field
- A C2 or native of French is required, and the ability to teach French
language courses as well as courses in French about French language in society
- Interest in participating in interdisciplinary modules with colleagues from
the Literature & Culture and Politics & Society profiles
- Teaching experience at university level with relevant teaching
qualifications (such as a BKO)
- Excellent research qualities, as evidenced by a publication record in
international peer-reviewed journals
- Ability to work both individually and in a (virtual) multidisciplinary team
- Organizational competence and excellent communication skills
- A willingness to obtain research funding grants
- Ability to teach in English. Knowledge of Dutch or willingness to learn
within a reasonable period of time is one of the conditions for tenure
- Ability to meet deadlines and produce work of a consistently high standards.

Passive knowledge of Spanish is desired but not required for the position.

Conditions of Employment:
The University of Groningen offers a salary dependent on qualifications and
work experience from a minimum of € 3,545 (scale 11 Dutch Universities) to a
maximum of € 5,513 (scale 12) gross per month for a fulltime position. On top
of that income the candidate will receive an 8% holiday allowance and an
annual bonus of 8.3%. The conditions are in accordance with the Collective
Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU).

The appointment will begin in February 2019. The position is fulltime, but an
employment of a minimum of 0,8 FTE is also possible. The appointment will
initially be on a temporary basis for one year with the possibility of
becoming a permanent position following a positive Results and Development
assessment.
