Meeting Description:
Empirical evidence about the processing of fictional discourse as opposed to
non-fictional discourse has proved to pose significant challenges.
Specifically, the crucial role of fiction and its consequences for
acceptability (or lack thereof) of circumstances and facts is under question
and difficult to empirically verify. Furthermore, the adaptive strategies at
work relate to the more general question of how figurative language and
grammar interact. In this workshop, we want to reflect on methods and
possibilities of testing fictional texts through empirical experimentation by
bringing together experts from different disciplines who are concerned with
the intersection of linguistic analysis and literary studies. The question of
how to model figurative language more generally will be the overarching
objective of our endeavor.
