Job Title: Postdoctoral Research Assistant
Job Rank: Post Doc

Specialty Areas: Computational Linguistics; Automatic Speech Recognition

Description:

The Faculty of Linguistics, Philology and Phonetics is looking to hire a
research assistant for Professor Aditi Lahiri's ERC funded project ‘MORPHON:
Resolving Morpho-Phonological Alternation: Historical, Neurolinguistic, and
Computational approaches’. The focus of this post is computational, working on
an ASR which has evolved from a linguistic model of phonological
representation based on linguistic principles and the FUL model (Featurally
Underspecified Lexicon).

The existing Flex-SR speech recognition system converts an acoustic signal
into a set of phonological underspecified features which directly access words
in the lexicon with the three-way matching logic. We need to implement a
morphological extension to handle morpho-phonological alternations and
morphological constraints.

The postholder will be based at the Faculty's Language and Brain Laboratory in
Oxford and will work alongside with the PI, the Consultant Professor Henning
Reetz and our Laboratory Manager Dr Colin Brooks to extend the existing ASR
system to morphologically complex words and improve the ASR system in
reverberation and noisy environments.

The postholder will have a strong background in either engineering or computer
science with established experience in working with speech processing systems;
at least a Masters degree in linguistics or computer science or equivalent
experience, and with excellent command of implementation of linguistic
concepts in a programming language; excellent programming skills in Python,
C++ and MatLab; and expertise in Deep Neural Networks and Kaldi, HMM and GMM.

The post is funded by a European Research Council research grant and is
fixed-term until 30 September 2021.
