Meeting Description:
''The German Language in (North) America Revisited'' will be held at
University of Texas, Austin on October 19 and 20, 2018. This conference is a
follow-up to a conference called “The German Language in America,” which was
held at the University of Texas at Austin in 1968, and is intended both to
celebrate that earlier conference and to present the newest research on German
language islands in North America.
Speakers include:
Hans C. Boas,
Roslyn Burns,
Jennifer Dailey-O'Cain,
Ryan Dux,
Glenn Gilbert,
William Keel,
Grit Liebscher,
Samantha Litty,
Marc Pierce,
Karen Roesch,
and Joseph Salmons.
We also intend to publish an edited volume based on the conference papers.
These speakers will present on “the state of the art” in research on the
following German language islands in North America: Texas German (Boas,
Pierce), Mennonite Low German (Burns), German in Canada (Dailey-O’Cain and
Liebscher), Wisconsin Low German (Dux), Kansas German (Keel), Wisconsin German
(Litty and Salmons), and Indiana German (Roesch). We also plan to conclude
the conference with a roundtable session discussing the further development of
research on German in North America. We are particularly pleased that Glenn
Gilbert will attend the conference, as he organized the original 1968
conference that this year’s conference will commemorate.
