The Ph.D. Program in Urban Education and the Ph.D. Program in Latin American,
Iberian and Latino Cultures (LAILaC) at the GC are jointly seeking an
Associate or Full Professor who is a scholar in language, literacy, and
culture, and specializes in the politics of language and education. Both
programs place a high value on social justice-oriented and public facing
scholarship.
The programs seek a faculty member who has conducted research on:
- U.S. Latinx and immigrant communities and their education;
- A critical sociological/anthropological perspective on the politics of
language, particularly on Spanish in the U.S.; and
- Bilingualism and education.
This position will report to the Executive Officer in the Ph.D. Program in
Urban Education with a dotted line to a Professor in the Ph.D. Program in
Latin American, Iberian and Latino Cultures. This position is expected to
begin in Fall 2019.
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Teach graduate level courses.
- Mentor graduate students and supervising doctoral dissertations.
- Organize and participate in GC events that bring together CUNY and outside
scholars.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Participating in the public-facing presentation of science and the
philosophy of science at the GC.
Qualifications:
For Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor:
Ph.D. degree in area(s) of experience or equivalent. Also required are the
ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and
ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.
A preferred candidate should have:
- Doctorate degree in Education, Hispanic Sociolinguistics, or a related
discipline.
- Experience teaching and mentoring students from diverse backgrounds.
- Demonstrated ability to teach graduate courses, supervise Ph.D.
dissertations and provide doctoral level professional development.
- A distinguished publication record and extensive research experience in the
field as demonstrated by the publication of books, peer-reviewed articles, and
community-based scholarship.
- A comprehensive agenda for future research.
- Demonstrated record of public engagement with communities, schools,
professional organizations, etc.
- Diverse methodological expertise including ethnography and other qualitative
approaches.
- Demonstrated commitment to sustaining and extending the internationally
acclaimed work on the politics of Spanish and language education already
established at The Graduate Center and the work in public schools and
universities throughout the country.
