Meeting Description:

(Im)politeness has been a topic of extensive research over the past few
decades. Consequently, researchers working in the field have over the years
proposed, developed and adopted a wide range of theoretical, analytical and
methodological approaches to (im)politeness in human interaction. Due to the
popularity of (im)politeness as an academic area, it is of utmost importance
to encourage further synergies between researchers who do research on this
topic with a view to proposing new agendas, directions and avenues for
research. This endeavour requires researchers to examine, with a fresh eye,
how mainstream approaches to (im)politeness can be brought together with less
mainstream uptakes. Organised under the aegis of the Linguistic Politeness
Research Group, and around the theme of ''Within and Beyond Mainstream
Approaches to (Im)politeness'', the 12th International Conference on
(Im)politeness will be held at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge (17 -19
July 2019), to continue the tradition and success of previous Politeness and
Impoliteness symposia.


Call for Papers:

The 12th International Conference on (Im)politeness serves to (i) identify and
highlight innovative approaches to (im)politeness research; (ii) provide a
platform for the presentation of the latest findings in the field; (iii)
encourage further collaboration between researchers who examine this
fascinating topic from different theoretical and analytical perspectives; and
(iv) explore future directions and avenues for research in the field. We
therefore warmly welcome proposals for individual lectures and panels that
investigate (im)politeness with a view to bridging the gap between dominant
and non-mainstream approaches. Papers on the following themes may be
considered as particularly relevant to the theme of this event:

(Im)politeness and language aggression

(Im)politeness and social media

(Im)politeness in the era of globalisation

Minority languages and (im)politeness

Experimental investigations of face and (im)politeness

(Im)politeness and taking of offence

Corpus-based approaches to (im)politeness

Critical approaches to face and (im)politeness

(Im)politeness and intercultural communication

(Im)politeness and cyberbullying

(Im)politeness and variational pragmatics

Cognitive approaches to (im)politeness

Experimental approaches to (im)politeness

Interdisciplinary approaches to (im)politeness

(Im)politeness and language teaching

 

However, in line with the tradition of previous conferences, papers on any
area related to (im)politeness research are warmly welcome.

Submission Guidelines:

Abstracts for regular papers should be approximately 250 words (excluding
references) and should be submitted via Easychair not later than by 15
February 2019.
 
All abstracts will be reviewed by an international scientific committee and
the decision will be emailed to the participants by the end of March, 2019.
Participants may be the first author of only one presentation.

Outlines for panels should be approximately 500 words (excluding references)
and should be submitted via Easychair  by 15 February 2019. Each panel should
have minimum 4 and maximum 8 presentations.

All abstracts for panels will be reviewed by an international scientific
committee and the decision will be emailed to the panel organisers by the end
of March, 2019. Prospective panel organisers can either invite their own
participants or send out a call for papers and decide on the abstracts that
they deem suitable for their panel.
