Description:
The Spanish and French Studies Department at Occidental invites applications
for a tenure-line position in Spanish Linguistics at the Assistant Professor
level beginning August 16, 2019. A strong theoretical background is expected.
Scholarly and/or pedagogical interests in issues of bilingualism, regional
variation in Latin American Spanish, language maintenance/attrition in the
Spanish-speaking diaspora, or Spanish as a heritage language are particularly
welcome.
Applicants must have the Ph.D. by August 2019, in an appropriate area of
Spanish linguistics, a native or near-native command of Spanish, and a
demonstrable commitment to both teaching and scholarship. The successful
candidate will be expected to teach five courses per year, including
linguistics (both introductory courses and courses in area of specialization,
in English and Spanish), Spanish language, and courses in the college’s Core
program, and to maintain an active research program appropriate in the liberal
arts context.
Applicants should submit:
- A letter of interest demonstrating a commitment to academic excellence in a
diverse liberal arts environment with a mission of equity and excellence; the
letter should include a brief discussion of teaching experience, current
scholarship, and theoretical and/or methodological approach(es) to teaching
and research;
- A more detailed statement of teaching philosophy and areas of teaching
interest, part of which should address the applicant’s demonstrated commitment
to, past evidence of, and future plans for creating equitable opportunities
for learning and mentoring especially for underrepresented students (2 pages
max);
- Samples of syllabi for Spanish language and linguistics courses (previously
taught or proposed);
- A description of scholarly work and plans for research;
- A curriculum vitae;
- Graduate transcripts;
- Three letters of recommendation (sent under separate cover) that speak to
the candidate’s scholarly and teaching abilities.
A commitment to offering mentorship to students of diverse backgrounds is

Semi-finalists will be asked for research samples and teaching evaluations.
Interviews will be held at the MLA Convention. Receipt of materials will be
acknowledged by email.
