Subject: Phonology: PhD, Universität Leipzig, Germany
Institution/Organization: Universität Leipzig
Department: Linguistics
Web Address: https://www.uni-leipzig.de/en/university/working-at-leipzig-university/job-opportunities/
Level: PhD
Duties: Research
Specialty Areas: Phonology
Description:
The University of Leipzig, Germany, offers full funding for 3 PhD candidates
within the Emmy Noether Junior Research Group “Grammatical Strength in
Prosodic Morphology: Typology and Theory”, funded by the Deutsche
Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG).
Each research assistant (PhD) position is funded for 3 years, with social
benefits (payscale: 0.65 TVL-E13).
The Emmy Noether Junior Research Group “Grammatical Strength in Prosodic
Morphology: Typology and Theory” investigates the hypothesis that grammar is
sensitive to gradient distinctions and not based on categorical linguistic
elements. Different strength-based phenomena in phonology will be
investigated: 1) competition in lexical accent systems; 2) under- and
overapplication in tonal morphology (empirical focus: Otomanguean); and 3)
morphologically distinct foot templates (empirical focus: Germanic).
The PhD students will have the option to be associated with the graduate
program “Interaction of Grammatical Building Blocks” at Leipzig University and
profit from its course-work (with courses taught by Leipzig faculty and by
internationally renowned guest scholars from elsewhere).
Starting date: August 01, 2019
Tasks:
- Empirical investigation of typological data on grammatical strength in
prosodic morphology (focus on lexical accent systems, tonal morphology and
template morphology)
- Theoretical analyses of grammatical strength phenomena in theoretical
phonology and morphology
Qualification:
- Master’s degree in linguistics or related fields
- Interest in theoretical phonology and typology
Please send your application (in German or English), with the usual documents
