Subject: Linguistic Theories; Morphology; Syntax; Typology: Professor, University of Potsdam, Germany

University or Organization: University of Potsdam
Department: Linguistics
Job Location: Potsdam, Germany
Web Address: https://www.uni-potsdam.de/ling/
Job Title: Variation and Variability in Morphosyntax/Morphological Systems
Job Rank: Professor; W2 Professor

Specialty Areas: Linguistic Theories; Morphology; Syntax; Typology

Description:

The holder of this position will investigate and model variation and
variability in morpho-syntactic systems, compared to universal tendencies. The
empirical focus lies on non- Indo-European languages, especially on the
identification of structural similarities and differences, and how these
inform grammar-theoretical and typological modeling.

The prospective professor will have proof of expertise (in research and
teaching) in the comparative evaluation of variation and variability of
non-Indo-European languages. In addition to a specialization in morphology
and/or morphosyntax, we welcome applications that demonstrate solid expertise
in syntax, a specialization in African languages, and expertise in at least
one other non-Indo-European language family.

Applicants must have a solid background in grammar theory and theoretical
modeling, work with empirical-experimental methods, and demonstrate how
grammar-theoretical modeling can be advanced through cross-linguistic and
within-language variation. Their research profile must fit excellently to the
research focuses of the Collaborative Research Centre/SFB 1287, to which they
are expected to contribute. They will teach undergraduate and graduate courses
(in German and English) in linguistics in the B.Sc. and M.Sc. degree programs
offered by the Department of Linguistics. Very good command of English is a
prerequisite; an international network and experience in the acquisition of
third-party funding are also desired.

The following application requirements for professors must be documented in
accordance with Section 41 of the Brandenburg Higher Education Act
(Brandenburgisches Hochschulgesetz, BbgHG): a completed university degree,
pedagogical talent, and a particular aptitude for scientific and scholarly
work, as is typically documented by a disserta- tion project; comprehensive
competences in science management and additional scholarly achievements as
evidenced by a Habilitation (post-doctoral dissertation), a junior
professorship or work as a research associate at an institution of higher
education or an extramural research institution, or scholarly activity in the
private sector, or in a similar social field, whether in Germany or abroad.
The appointment procedure is conducted in accordance with Section 40 BbgHG.

The University strives for a balanced gender ratio at all levels. Severely
disabled applicants will be given preferential consideration in the event of
equal qualification. We expressly invite applications from people with
migration backgrounds.

The University of Potsdam offers dual career support and coaching for
newly-appointed professors: www.uni-potsdam.de/berufungen.html.

Applications (to be submitted in English, including a presentation of your
research interests, curriculum vitae, copies of academic certificates and
documents, a list of publications, a list of courses taught, a list of
externally funded projects) should be sent (in a single PDF file) to the
University of Potsdam at the application email provided below within four
weeks of the publication of this notice. If you have any questions, please
