From: Dr. I. M. Nick [mavi.yaz at web.de]
Subject: Book Chapter Call: Names, Naming, Identity, & Law
Around the world, across different cultures and languages, names are used to
mark individual and group identity. The significance of names therefore
extends far beyond their surface indexical properties. The names a person or
group are officially permitted or restricted to carry can have a direct
bearing upon categories of membership and mediate social inclusion and
exclusion. Accordingly, laws governing the selection, alteration,
registration, meaning, and prohibition of names are inextricably tied to
essential questions of socio-economic access, privilege, and power. Against
this background, this call is for chapter proposals that critically address
one of the following two sub-areas:
SUB-AREA ONE: the relationship between names, naming, the law and one of the
following areas of identity: gender identification, sexual orientation,
ethnoracial classification, family status, political affiliation,
socio-economic attainment, religious denomination; nationality and
citizenship, etc.
SUB-AREA TWO: the analytical methods used by private industry and/or
governmental agencies to covertly or overtly extrapolate information about
name-bearers’ potential identity using onomastic data.
The focus of this publication is placed upon nations where English is used as
either a national or official language. However, chapter proposals that draw
comparisons with other geolinguistic areas are also welcome. Proposals may
explore any type of name (e.g. personal names, place names, trade names, brand
names, etc.). The intended readership for this publication is made up of
university students in advanced courses (upper undergrad/grad) as well as
researchers in the disciplines of linguistics, language policy, law, history,
sociology, government and politics. Despite the interdisciplinary appeal of
this publication, this volume is primarily intended for students and scholars
in language/linguistics. Researchers are encouraged to contact Dr. Nick with
any questions regarding the suitability of envisioned themes.
Interested authors are invited to submit a book chapter proposal with the
following elements: 1.) a working title for the proposed chapter; 2.) an
abstract detailing the contents of the book chapter (max. 800 words, excluding
references); 3.) a preliminary list of references; and 4.) a professional
biographical sketch about the author(s) (max. 300 words). All proposals must
be prepared for blind review, without any reference to the identity or
affiliation of the author(s). All submissions must be original contributions
and may not be under consideration for possible publication elsewhere. The
deadline for receipt of chapter proposals is midnight, January 5, 2020
(Central European Time).
All submissions should be sent to Dr. Nick as a Word doc. For organizational
purposes, be sure to include “NamesandLaw19” in the subject line of the email.
The body of the email should contain the contact information for the author(s)
and indicate which of the above two sub-areas is the subject of the chapter
proposal.
Final book chapters must be between 6,000-7,000 words (including references)
and comply with the publication guidelines of the publisher (pending
acceptance).
Important Dates:
