Focus: The Helsinki Summer School in Cognition, Communication and the brain focuses on interdisciplinary approaches to studying the neurocognitive underpinnings of topics in cognitive sciences, speech sciences and cognitive neuroscience using a wide variety of both electrophysiological (EEG, MEG, and EEG with TMS) and behavioural (e.g. Eye tracking and other psychophysiological methods) approaches. Course has plethora of lectures by international experts, such as Stefan Elmer, Daniela Sammler, David Kirsh, Andriy Myachikov, and Julia Festman on embodied cognition, multilingualism, language and plasticity, music and speech. In addition, the course includes hands-on training and/or demo sessions in various less-known methods and tools (MEG, TMS, articulography, VR tools, computational approaches to data analysis and more).
Minimum Education Level: BA
Special Qualifications:
International students at doctoral or master's level, selected on the basis of applications, whose topic of interest is related to measuring human cognition using both neuroscientific and behavioural methods.
Description:
The course prepares the students to combine various research methods and
perspectives in an interdisciplinary fashion, with particular emphasis on
understanding how to approach practical research questions from various
scientific angles. In practice, the students are expected to attain limited
working proficiency with at least two novel research methods pertaining to
course topics.

Registration Instructions:
A good command of English is necessary for completing the course (following
teaching, participating in classroom discussions, writing essays) as well as
managing day-to-day matters in Finland. An applicant can be rejected if
his/her level of English is not deemed equivalent to the standards.
Furthermore, please provide a brief motivation letter as students when sending
your application to participate in the course.
