The Department of African and African American Studies seeks applications for
a preceptor in African languages. Preferred languages for the Preceptor
include the languages of West Africa -Yoruba, Igbo, Twi, Fufulde/Pulaar,
Bamana, Hausa, and West African Pidgin. The appointment is expected to begin
July 1, 2019.
Reporting to the Director of the African Language Program, in close
collaboration with the African Language Program Coordinator, the successful
candidate will:
- Teach one or two West African language courses at all levels
- Assist in the development of language learning materials – online and to
author monographs in the languages appointed for
- Participate in weekly training and professional development activities on
campus and regionally.
- Work with Teaching Assistants towards the improvement of African languages
taught at Harvard University
- Participate in weekly teacher training workshops for teachers of African
languages.
The position is for one year. Reappointment may be possible on a yearly basis
for up to eight years (within the eligibility guidelines of the FAS),
contingent on performance, enrollments, curricular need, position
availability, and divisional dean authorization.
Basic Qualifications:
The successful applicants should have a scholarly background in the
linguistics of the language family of their expertise, literature, history or
the social sciences, native-level fluency, strong interest in teaching
language and culture, experience teaching American students, and an openness
to learning new teaching methods.
Additional Qualifications:
Advanced degree preferred.
