Job Location: University of Melbourne, Australia

Job Title: Postdoctoral Fellow in Australian Languages and Linguistics Processing
Job Rank: Post Doc
Specialty Areas: Language Documentation; Psycholinguistics; Syntax; Australian Languages
Required Language(s): Australian
Description:
The ARC Centre of Excellence for the Dynamics of Language (CoEDL) seeks a
postdoctoral fellow at the University of Melbourne to undertake research on
language processing in Australian Indigenous languages as part of a
collaborative project led by Prof Rachel Nordlinger and A/Prof Evan Kidd (Max
Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics, Nijmegen, The Netherlands), and
involving a number of PhD students as well as the appointee.
The ARC Centre of Excellence for the Dynamics of Language (CoEDL) has an
ambitious series of interlinked projects, focusing on language as a dynamic
and variable system, and drawing on the full diversity of the world’s
languages through four programs focusing on the design space of language
(Shape), how it is learned (Learning) and processed (Processing), and how
linguistic structures evolve at various timescales (Evolution). Two ‘threads’
(Archiving, and Research technologies) will enable the technological advances
needed to drive forward the language sciences in the coming decades. This
position will engage closely with both the Centre
(http://www.dynamicsoflanguage.edu.au/) and the Research Unit for Indigenous
Language (https://arts.unimelb.edu.au/indiglang/) within the School of
Languages and Linguistics.
In collaboration with the project leaders, the postdoctoral fellow will assist
in the research initiatives of CoEDL, specifically undertaking experimental
linguistic processing research on selected Indigenous languages of Australia.
The appointee will be provided with the opportunity and mentorship to build
their own research profile and will collaborate in publications and be
involved fully in the life of the research project. The Fellow will also
assist with the co-ordination of relevant symposia and engage in public
outreach as required. There is an expectation that the postdoctoral fellow
will be involved in the training and supervision of PhD members of the team,
but this is primarily a research-only position.
The position will involve travel between the University of Melbourne and the
Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics (Nijmegen, The Netherlands),
although the researcher will be expected to spend extended periods of time at
the University of Melbourne where the position is based. The position will
also involve fieldwork in Indigenous Australia, as negotiated.
This is a full time, fixed term (2 year) position commencing mid-2019 Salary,
commensurate with experience is $87,415 - $93,830 (ARC Post Doc Res
Fellowship, Level A) with 17% superannuation. For more information see the
position description.
