Description:

The laboratoire Dynamique Du Langage (DDL) of the CNRS in Lyon invites
applications for a three-year postdoc position in the area of cross-linguistic
Corpus Linguistics. The position is part of a joint German/French project
funded by DFG and ANR called “Cross-linguistic phonetics and morphology using
a time-aligned multilingual reference corpus built from documentations of 50
languages: Big data on small languages” (DoReCo). At DDL, the project PI is
Frank Seifart, in collaboration with François Pellegrino and Laurent Romary.
In Germany, the project PI is Manfred Krifka in collaboration with Susanne
Fuchs.

DoReCo will investigate spontaneously spoken language in a diverse sample of
about 50 languages. We will focus on investigating universal vs.
language-specific patterns in the temporal distribution of morphemes regarding
information rate in terms of morphemes per second and the number of morphemes
in inter-pausal units to gain insights into cognitive constraints on language
use. The German sister project will study phonetic lengthening depending on
the nature of segments and as indicators of phrase boundaries. 

This work involves the creation of a reference corpus of transcribed,
translated and morphologically analyzed texts from at least 50 languages (at
least 10,000 words per languages), in collaboration with the creators of the
original corpora. This will require conversion of corpora from their original
format (primarily ELAN’s eaf format) into project-wide consistent formats
conformant to the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) standard. All data will be
automatically time-aligned with audio recordings at the phoneme level (by the
German team). It is an important goal of the project that this reference
corpus is made available for future research. 

For this reason, we are looking for a person with a qualification in corpus
building / language archiving and research interests in (cross-linguistic)
information rate and packaging. Please specify your past experience in those
areas, including software skills. The work will require contact with project
partners in Germany, and with the creators of the original corpora; project
work will be supported by two student assistants. 

The PostDoc will be hired by the CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche
Scientifique). The position should start March 15, 2019 running for 36 months.
The place of work will be the laboratoire Dynamique Du Langage in Lyon,
France. French is the language of general communication in the workplace but
English is frequently used for scientific meetings and seminars. Some
knowledge of French is thus an advantage but not a requirement.
