Description:
The Faculty of Humanities at the University of Turku invites applications for
the position of University Lecturer in Spanish at the Department of Spanish in
the School of Languages and Translation Studies. The position will be filled
on a permanent basis beginning on 1 August 2019.
The Department of Spanish is part of the School of Languages and Translation
Studies. The School is an active, diverse and international centre for
language study education and research. The Department of Spanish focuses on
modern language use (geographic and social variation, language contacts,
translation). The University of Turku is one of two Finnish universities that
offer Spanish language studies that range from basic to doctoral-level
studies, and it is the only university that offers professional-level studies
in translation. The Department’s teaching is based on research, and the
Department’s goal is to familiarise its students with this knowledge from the
onset of their studies.
In accordance with the university research career model, the position of
university lecturer is a third-stage career position. The university lecturer
is responsible for teaching the subject in the Bachelor of Arts Degree
Programme (basic and intermediate studies in Spanish) and in the Master of
Arts Degree Programme (advanced Studies in Spanish). The following Master’s
degree programmes in the University of Turku are used to train
Spanish-language specialists: the Degree Programme in Language Learning and
Teaching, the Degree Programme in Multilingual Translation Studies, and the
Language Specialist Degree Programme. The university lecturer supervises
theses and participates in the development of the Department’s teaching and
research, the student admission process, administrative tasks and the
acquisition of external research funding, and they are also expected to
actively pursue independent scientific research.
The eligibility criteria for prospective applicants are defined in the
University of Turku’s rules of procedure. Prospective applicants for the
position of university lecturer must hold an appropriate doctoral degree and
have the ability to supervise theses and provide high-quality teaching that is
based on researched knowledge. During the assessment of the merits of the
applicants for the position, their scientific work, expertise in the field,
teaching experience and pedagogical education, ability to produce study
materials and other teaching merits as well as a demonstration lecture will be
taken into account as part of the process.
Successful applicants are required to demonstrate clear evidence of
postdoctoral research, a detailed research agenda to the University of Turku,
and an excellent proficiency in Spanish.
The most distinguished candidates will be invited to provide a teaching sample
that will be open to the public. This sample lecture will be reviewed, and the
teaching skills evaluation committee will issue a written statement on the
teaching merits of the applicants. The candidates may also be interviewed.
The position includes a 6-month trial period.
To apply, please see the application link provided below. Your application
must include the following:
- A CV, an academic portfolio (University of Turku format),
- A list of publications (Academy of Finland format),
- A research plan including a proposal that is no longer than three typed
pages and that lays out your vision for the future development of your
research and teaching activities in the Department
