Description:

The School of Arts, Languages and Cultures at the University of Manchester
invites applications for a new full-time lectureship post in English Corpus
Linguistics, with a special emphasis on computational methods, within the
Department of Linguistics and English Language. The position normally has a
probation period of 4 years.

The successful applicant will be expected to:
- Be research-active in their specialist field at an international level of
excellence, 
- Contribute to the teaching and curriculum design of English Grammar and
Corpus Linguistics across the curriculum in the English Language and
Linguistics undergraduate programmes and the Linguistics MA programme, and 
- Contribute to the management and administration of the subject area and to
the pastoral care of its students in ways proposed by and agreed with the Head
of Department

There are likely to be opportunities to become involved in a new joint
Undergraduate Programme in Linguistics and Computer Science, and a new Digital
Humanities Minor programme.
 
Manchester is an international centre for Linguistics and English language.
The Department is virtually unique in the UK and beyond in the breadth of
subject areas and theoretical approaches represented by its members, many of
whom are internationally renowned scholars in their specialisms. 

Particular strengths in the Department include: 
- The linguistics of English (both synchronic and diachronic),
- Phonetics and phonology, 
- Semantics, 
- Pragmatics, 
- Morphology, 
- Syntax, 
- Typology, 
- Language contact and multilingualism, 
- Variationist sociolinguistics, 
- Historical linguistics, 
- The field-work based study of lesser-described languages, and 
- Quantitative approaches. 

The School of Arts, Languages and Cultures comprises seventeen different
discipline areas, plus the University Language Centre. It provides teaching to
over 5,000 undergraduates and postgraduates, and employs around 300 academic
staff, around 30 postdoctoral research fellows, and a large cohort of graduate
teaching assistants, all supported by around 120 professional support staff.
The core of the School’s interests is the field of human cultures, beliefs,
institutions and languages. The work of colleagues in the School is informed
by a variety of theoretical perspectives and intellectual disciplines. The
School is currently in the process of making a major strategic investment to
expand research and teaching activity in the digital humanities and digital
creative sectors, as part of a wider University expansion in digital and data
science.
