Meeting Description:
Language as Goal-directed Sequential Behavior: computational theories, brain
mechanisms, evolutionary roots
Shonan Village Center, Japan May 20-23, 2019 (Check-in: May 19)
Registration Deadline: Feb 18, 2019
The aim of this meeting, sponsored by the National Institute for Informatics,
Japan, and patterned on the Dagstuhl Seminars, is to critically examine the
reigning conceptual framework in linguistics in the light of an alternative
view that language is a behavior that is intended to be interpreted by and to
influence others, similar to other goal-directed sequential behaviors in its
structure, function, and evolutionary origins. Participants will discuss
these and other ideas, with the explicit aims of (i) evaluating the progress
attained to date in understanding the nature of language and related behaviors
and (ii) identifying promising directions for future research in cognitive
linguistics, in the psychology and neurobiology of language, and in natural
language engineering.
