Call for Papers:
''German(ic) Language Minorities in Latin America: Methods, Basics, Case
Studies''
Research on German and other Germanic minorities in Latin America is
characterized by a large number of case studies, often providing meaningful
insight. Yet there is little networking between researchers, helping to
compare the results. As a first step towards more exchange and interaction,
the first conference dealing with ''German speaking Minorities in Latin
America - Methods, Basics, Case Studies'' will take place on October 11/12,
2019 at the Catholic University Eichstätt-Ingolstadt (Campus Eichstätt),
Germany. We invite researchers from the field of linguistics and other
relevant disciplines to participate in this conference. The title should be
read as follows:
- ''German(ic) speaking'': As for Germanic languages, there are mostly German
speaking minorities in Latin America. In order to establish a common network,
we also want to focus on further Germanic minorities in contact with Spanish
and Portuguese, such as the Scandinavian languages, Dutch and Yiddish, which
thus far have only received little attention within this context.
- ''in Latin America'': The conference will focus explicitly on the mainly
Spanish Portuguese speaking region south of the US. Research on German
minorities in the US and Canada is already taking place on a larger scale and
can only partially be compared to the situation between Mexico and Chile. The
latter region however, with all its cultural and linguistic variety, does show
common traits, calling for an interconnected research.
- ''Methods'': Therefore, methods of research fitting the situation in Latin
America need to be developed, and concepts like that of the language island
and its applicability to the situation in Latin America need to be
scrutinized. An intended result is for comparisons to the US and other parts
of the world to be drawn with more precision.
- ''Basics'': Linguistics represent the core and starting point of the
conference, but of course other scientific perspectives are indispensable in
order to promote research in this field. Input from disciplines such as
history, social studies, media studies, literary studies, geography and others
is therefore most welcome to facilitate interdisciplinary thinking and
working.
- ''Case Studies'': They are the foundation of what is known about German
speaking minorities. Along with the methodological considerations, the case
studies will provide an overview of the current state of research.
We invite submission of abstracts of up to 300 words length (excluding
examples and bibliography). Please send your abstracts to
patrick.wolf-farre at uni-due.de by May 12, 2019. We will respond by May 31,
2019.
Talks are planned to be 30 minutes + 15 minutes of discussion.
The conference languages are German, English, Portuguese and Spanish. Talks in
Portuguese and Spanish are asked to provide slides in German or English, which
can be translated with the help of the organizing team.
During the conference, we intend to establish a network, serving as a contact
point for researchers interested in German/Germanic Languages in Latin
America. Finally, the methodological and fundamental results of the conference
are planned to be published.
Plenary Speakers:
Prof. Dr. Cléo Vilson Altenhofen, UFRGS Porto Alegre
Prof. Dr. Jan Heegård Petersen, Københavns Universitet
Dr. Peter Rosenberg, Europa-Universität Viadrina, Frankfurt (Oder)
