Description:

A three-year Leverhulme-funded project, 'Alternatives  in the foundations of a
theory of implicit meaning' based at University College London with the PI,
Richard Breheny, and Co-Investigators: Jacopo Romoli (U. of Ulster), Yasutada
Sudo and Nathan Klinedinst (UCL). The postholder will work with the team on
the aims of developing a database of factors that lead to the selection of
Alternatives for scalar implicature; testing current competing theories of
Alternatives; and developing and testing any new theoretical possibilities
that emerge in light of results. Responsibilities will include developing
materials and methods for experimental research designed to achieve these
aims; analysing, writing up and presenting results.

The post is available from 1 September, 2019 and is funded for up to 3 years
in the first instance.

Key Requirements:
Applicants must have completed a PhD in a relevant field (experimental
semantics/pragmatics; psycholinguistics). An excellent background in
experimental research in Semantics/Pragmatics is essential, as is a proven
track record of publications and/or conference presentations in
Semantics/Pragmatics and Experimental Linguistics research. Experience in the
statistical analysis of complex datasets is essential; also experience in
programming will be an advantage. Effective organisational and written and
verbal communication skills are also essential.
