Job Location: Helsinki, Finland

Job Title: Postdoctoral Researcher
Job Rank: Post Doc
Specialty Areas: Anthropological Linguistics; General Linguistics; Sociolinguistics; Typology
Description:
The Department of Languages invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher
in sociolinguistics for a fixed term period of three years from 1 September
2019 onwards (or as agreed).
The successful candidate will become a member of a 5-year research project
"Linguistic Adaptation: Typological and Sociolinguistic Perspectives to
Language Variation", 2019–2023. The project is funded by the European Research
Council (ERC). The PI of the project is Associate Professor Kaius Sinnemäki.
More information on the project is available at
https://www.helsinki.fi/en/researchgroups/linguistic-adaptation.
The project studies whether linguistic structures systematically adapt to
sociolinguistic environments across languages. One of its main aims is to
develop new methods for comparing sociolinguistic environments to one another
by synthesizing the large-scale typological approach with rich sociolinguistic
and sociohistorical analysis of societies. Sociolinguistic environments are
analyzed by transforming sociolinguistic, ethnographic, and historical data as
well as data acquired from specialists into a typology of sociolinguistic
environments.
The candidate will work primarily on the sociolinguistic aspects of the
project, actively collaborating with the other project members and
participating in joint publications. The expertise of the selected candidate
on a language family or geographical region(s) may be considered an asset.
The appointee must hold a doctoral degree in a relevant discipline by the time
of appointment, and possess the ability to conduct independent scientific
research and the teaching skills required for the position. In addition, the
candidate is expected to have excellent knowledge of English.
Please submit your application as a single pdf file which includes the
following documents in English:
- Curriculum Vitae (maximum 2 pages)
- List of Publications
- Research Plan (maximum 5 pages, should include provisional budget for
research and travel expenses).
- Names of references (2).
The deadline for the application period is May 13, 2019 at 23.59 (local time
GMT +3).
More detailed information about the position and instructions for submitting
an application are available at the application link provided below.
