University or Organization: The University of British Columbia
Department: Linguistics
Job Location: Vancouver, BC, Canada
Web Address: https://linguistics.ubc.ca/
Job Title: Postdoctoral Fellowship in Computational Linguistics
Job Rank: Post Doc

Specialty Areas: Computational Linguistics

Description:

The Department of Linguistics, University of British Columbia – Vancouver,
invites applications for two (2) one-year Postdoctoral Fellowships in
Computational Linguistics, to commence no later than August 1, 2019.

These positions may be renewed for up to two years subject to budgetary
approval and positive appraisal of research progress and teaching. The
successful candidates must hold a PhD (or expect to have successfully defended
prior to the position start date) in a relevant area with a publication record
in major CL/NLP conferences (e.g. ACL, COLING, etc.). They should have
experience building computational models of natural language using Python, and
have experience running programming labs or other hands-on seminars.
Significant experience building neural network models, serving as a class
instructor, or creating curriculum relevant to computational linguistics would
all be major assets for this position. Multidisciplinary experience (i.e.
teaching or research involving more than one department) would also be very
desirable.

The Postdoctoral Fellows will be expected to participate actively in
curriculum design and teaching in the Linguistics department, with particular
focus on the new Master of Data Science in Computational Linguistics (MDS-CL)
program, which would include collaboration with other Master of Data Science
instructors from Linguistics, Statistics, and Computer Science. Fellows will
also carry out CL/NLP research in collaboration with the Computational
Linguistics faculty members. The successful candidates are expected to assist
with the supervision of undergraduate and graduate research assistants and
teaching assistants.

Information about the Department and faculty research can be found on our
website, https://linguistics.ubc.ca, and further information about the MDS-CL
Program, can be found at
https://mds.ubc.ca/programs/computational-linguistics. There will be some
support for research-associated costs, including conference travel.

Applicants should submit:
- A cover letter,
- A curriculum vitae,
- A one-page statement of research plans,
- A one-page teaching statement,
- Evidence of teaching experience and effectiveness,
- A one-page statement about their experience working with a diverse student
body and contributions or potential contributions to creating/advancing a
culture of equity and inclusion, and any other pertinent information (e.g.
links to relevant CL research projects).

Application materials should be submitted online at the application link
provided below. Applicants should also provide the names and contact
information for three referees who could provide confidential letters of
recommendation.

Review of applications will begin soon after May 3, 2019 and will continue
until the position is filled.

This position is subject to final budgetary approval. Salary will be
commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Equity and diversity are essential to academic excellence. An open and diverse
community fosters the inclusion of voices that have been underrepresented or
discouraged. We encourage applications from members of groups that have been
marginalized on any grounds enumerated under the B.C. Human Rights Code,
including sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression,
racialization, disability, political belief, religion, marital or family
status, age, and/or status as a First Nation, Métis, Inuit, or Indigenous
person.

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply.
