Description:

The Department of Cognitive Studies at Ecole Normale Supérieure is offering a
two-year postdoctoral researcher position on a project on the interaction of
general-purpose reasoning with interpretive processes. It is possible we make
an additional offer of a one-year position.

Tasks:
The postdoc's primary responsibility will be to conduct research in
experimental semantics, pragmatics, and the psychology of reasoning. The
French National Research Agency (ANR) grant Between Language and Reasoning
(PI: Salvador Mascarenhas) aims to understand the line between interpretation
and general-purpose reasoning, investigating interactions between linguistics
and decision making. Ongoing projects include a Bayesian
confirmation-theoretic approach to reasoning, experimental work on the effects
of pragmatic manipulations from psycholinguistics in reasoning tasks, and
studies of reasoning and hypothesis testing in infancy. Connections between
linguistics and other fields in cognitive science beyond reasoning and
decision-making are welcome. The position has a career development component:
the selected applicant will be encouraged to develop their own research
program using the time and resources of the lab, specifics to be discussed at
the moment of hiring. While this is primarily a research position, it might
also involve small organizational and teaching responsibilities. Regular
participation in collective scientific activities (e.g. seminars and lab
meetings) will be expected.

Research Environment:
The postdoc will be affiliated with Institut Jean Nicod. The postdoc will be
integrated into the larger LINGUAE group of the Department of Cognitive
Studies at Ecole Normale Supérieure, which offers a rich interdisciplinary
environment.

Profile:
The successful applicant will have a strong background in at least two of the
following areas:
- Formal semantics/pragmatics/logic;
- Experimental semantics/pragmatics;
- Psychology of reasoning;
- Economics and decision theory
