Description:
The University of New Mexico’s Department of Linguistics invites applications
for a one-year Visiting Assistant Professor in Linguistics, to begin in August
2020. We seek candidates specializing in typology, whose research orientation
is compatible with our commitment to cognitive, functional, usage-based
approaches to linguistic explanation. Competitive applicants will have
additional expertise in language description, language documentation, corpus
linguistics or discourse analysis. A successful candidate will be capable of
teaching courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels, including typology
and semantics.
The UNM Department of Linguistics is particularly concerned with the study of
languages native to the Americas, signed languages, and varieties of Spanish.
We are especially interested in scholars who will enhance our existing
strengths in linguistic typology, cognitive linguistics, language
documentation and description, variationist sociolinguistics, language
acquisition, and laboratory phonology.
New Mexico is one of the most multilingual and multicultural states in the
U.S. Building a diverse faculty committed to teaching and working in a
multicultural environment is a core value at UNM. Applicants are required to
submit a statement discussing how their research, teaching, service, and/or
outreach activities will help UNM advance equity and inclusion.
Minimum Qualification:
- Ph.D. in Linguistics or related field in hand by the time of appointment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Specialization in typology;
- Secondary specialization in language description;
- Research and teaching experience in language documentation, semantics,
corpus linguistics or discourse analysis;
- Excellence in scholarship in areas of specialization;
- Excellence in teaching;
- A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student
success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities.
