understanding of language with a specialist's understanding of ASL. The
master's program prepares students for work in fields such as language
teaching, interpreter education, language planning, bilingual education and
language assessment. Students who complete the M.A. program may apply to the
department's Ph.D. program to pursue advanced studies in a range of
theoretical and applied areas related to sign language.

- Ph.D. in Linguistics or a closely related field. To be considered for tenure
at Gallaudet University, a candidate must possess a terminal degree;

be required to learn the language and demonstrate competence as stipulated in
the Faculty Handbook. Support for learning ASL includes ASL classes, tutoring
and gatherings.
- Record of (or clear potential for) research and scholarship in signed
language linguistics and demonstrated success or clear potential for
generating external funding for research.
