Subject: Are These Pseudogapping Sentences Acceptable?
Would some of the native speakers of English be willing to help me? I need
your judgments of acceptability of the sentences below. The task is to
determine whether the sentences would be acceptable in the given sense if the
part inside the parentheses was left out:
1. Some had eaten mussels, because others had (eaten) shrimp.
2. Some had played football, because others had (played) baseball.
3. Some had eaten mussels, and she claims that others had (eaten) shrimp.
4. Some had played football, and she claims that others had (played) baseball.
