Linguistic Field(s): General Linguistics; Linguistic Theories; Morphology; Semantics; Syntax
Meeting Description:
The workshop focuses on the relation between wh-based relative clauses,
interrogative clauses, and semantic alternatives, particularly those triggered
by foci or contrastive topics. While the relation between wh-questions and
focus alternatives is well-known and studied, the relation between
wh-questions and wh-based relatives still raises questions. Evidence from
various linguistic domains suggests that relatives are derived from
interrogatives: relative wh-words are derived from interrogative ones (if they
are not identical), relative wh-words always move, while interrogative ones
sometimes remain in situ, the landing site of fronted relative operators is
higher than that of interrogative ones, the set of relative wh-words is always
the subset of interrogative ones, etc. Yet, the theoretical understanding of
why this relation between interrogatives and relatives should hold is poor.
Nor is it well understood how the meaning of relative clauses/wh-words should
be compositionally derived from the meaning of interrogative clauses/wh-words.
For a more detailed description, see the workshop website.
