Description:

Applications are invited for a 1-year full-time position of research assistant
at LLACAN (CNRS, France). The appointment will be made at one of two levels:
pre-doctoral, for candidates holding an MA degree, or postdoctoral, for
candidates holding a recent PhD degree in Linguistics. The assistant will be
associated with the project “Discourse reporting in African storytelling” and
is expected to carry out a variety of assigned tasks, as well as pursue their
own research project related to the project. Possible tasks include help with
the analysis and annotation of existing data, checking data for errors, help
with preparing data for online publication in the form of a searchable corpus.
Possible own project may involve collection and analysis of data in a
little-described language, development of an annotated corpus of narrative
texts, or a typological study of phenomena related to discourse reporting. 

The position is for one year. The monthly salary is around 1700 euros
(pre-doctoral) or between 2200 and 2400 euros (postdoctoral), depending on
experience and qualifications; standard social benefits are included. The
preferred starting date is October 15, 2020, negotiable.

The position is open to candidates with the minimum of MA degree in
Linguistics. The position is especially suitable for recent MA recipients
wishing to develop an independent project that may lead them to pursue a PhD
degree in the areas of linguistic typology or African studies. 

Requirements:

- ability and willingness to work in a team; 
- fluent English (some knowledge of French is an asset);
- previous experience with analysis of linguistic data;
- familiarity with ELAN, Toolbox/Fieldworks, Praat and/or computational
skills;
- background in field linguistics (preferred);
- not currently enrolled in a PhD program (with the exception of candidates
for the postdoctoral position due to graduate before the starting date).
 
The researcher will be affiliated with LLACAN, a vibrant community of experts
in African languages and linguistics. LLACAN is conveniently located in the
southern suburbs of Paris (reachable by metro and other public transport).

The position is funded by a grant from the European Research Council (ERC)
under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme
