Subject: Call for DeGruyter's Trends in Applied Lingusitics
I am writing as I proposed a book to the publisher De Gruyter for this series-
https://www.degruyter.com/view/serial/TAL-B
Title of the proposed book
Virtual Exchange as a way to support SLA: Studies on language learning through
online interaction
Brief explanation of what the book is about and why the topic is important
(theoretically and/or methodologically):
Recently virtual exchanges have proven to provide language learners with a
unique opportunity to develop their target language skills (Hauck, 2010;
Jauregi & Bañados, 2010). Specifically, virtual exchange research by Guth and
Helm (2010) and O’Dowd (2007) has highlighted speaking skills and pragmatics
was a focus of a study by Hilliker, Lenkaitis, & Bouhafa (2020). Research
needs to progress and continue to investigate the role of virtual exchanges as
a teaching tool to support SLA as well as a space for second language
development. Moreover, practitioners need specific guidance on different types
of exchanges that are possible as well as the outcomes of those exchanges so
they can make informed decisions on bringing this type of opportunity to their
language classrooms. To this end, this edited volume will contain chapters
that describe individual virtual exchanges along with some research done on
each exchange to show how the exchange supported specific second language
learning goals.
The editor approved my initial proposal and would now like to have titles and
abstracts from interested authors. If you are interested in publishing your
research in this book series please submit a 250 word abstract due by 9/1. In
addition, I would be grateful if you could please forward this to any of your
colleagues that would be interested in the topic.
Please let me know if you have any questions. I hope this email finds you
healthy and well.
Sending my best,
Shannon
