Abstract:
This work summarizes that copious data recorded in the late 1800s of the
Teguima (Ópata) language of northern Mexico. Teguima is a member of the Opata
subfamily of Uto-Aztecan, and this family is critical to the evaluation that
Opatan, Yomemian (Yaqui, Mayo), and Tarahumaran (Raramuri/Tarahumara,
Guarijío) constitute a larger genetic group (Taracahitic) within Uto-Aztecan.
The sound pattern of Younger Teguima differs significantly from that of Older
Teguima, which is described in the companion volume, A Vocabulary of the Older
Teguima (Ópata) Language. An introduction summarizes the sound pattern and
morphosyntax of the younger language. Slightly over 1,000 main entries are by
morpheme. An English-Younger Teguima index lists compounds and derivatives
found as subentries in the main section.
