Description:
Within the framework of the COBRA network, a European project funded by the
European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the
Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement n°859588, 15 PhD positions are
available.
Details can be found on the website: https://www.cobra-network.eu/
Research and training activities will focus on two major mechanisms employed
by speakers in conversational interaction, namely interactive alignment, and
prediction.
Two full-time positions for three years are available at the University of
Louvain (Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium):
1) Contribution of discourse markers to alignment in conversation
(https://www.cobra-network.eu/the-project/topics/esr7-contribution-of-discours
e-markers-to-alignment-in-conversation/) with secondments at the Max Planck
Institute for Psycholinguistics in Nijmegen (5 months) and Orange Labs,
Lanion, France (6 months). The aim of this project is to find out whether the
use of discourse markers (DMs) in spontaneous conversation is motivated by the
speaker’s needs and/eor by (the prediction by the speaker of) the listener’s
needs.
2) Discourse units and discourse alignment
(https://www.cobra-network.eu/the-project/topics/esr8-discourse-units-and-disc
ourse-alignment/) with secondments at Aix-Marseille University (5 months) and
Orange Labs, Lanion, France (6 months).
This PhD project focuses on the interaction between (i) discourse units, (ii)
discourse alignment, and (iii) discourse processing in conversation. It aims
to establish whether alignment applies to the building blocks of
conversational turns, beyond the level of words and phrases.
