Description:
The Canada Research Chair in Change, Adaptation and Revitalization (Dr.
Nicholas Welch) and the Department of Linguistics at Memorial University of
Newfoundland would like to invite those interested in pursuing an MA or PhD to
submit an application for the Fall 2020 term. Particular attention will be
given to applications that emphasize the following research areas:
- Indigenous languages of Canada
- Language revitalization and community linguistics
- Documentary and field linguistics
- Language change
- Language archive and corpus creation
We especially seek students with expertise and/or interest in any of the
following:
- Speaking or reading knowledge of an Indigenous language
- Library, archive or lab experience
- Computing or information-technology skills
Dr. Welch has active research programs in Dene morphosyntax, documentary
linguistics and language revitalization. Particular interests of his include
non-verbal predication, documenting the fine structure of clausal and
sentential peripheries and the creation of information-technology apps for
preserving and revitalizing threatened languages. Successful applicants will
work closely with Dr. Welch on research projects focussing on the
preservation, documentation and analysis of Indigenous languages of Canada,
particularly those of Labrador: Innu-aimun (Algonquian family) and Inuttut
(Inuit family), as well as the Dene languages of western Canada, particularly
Tłı̨chǫ (Dogrib). Two strong foci will be the maintenance and development of
a large online language archive and corpus, and the training of community
linguists in Labrador Indigenous communities.
All graduate students in our program receive Memorial’s baseline funding
packages of no less than $8,000 per year for two years (MA) or $12,000 per
year for four years (PhD). Competitive additional funding is available through
Dr. Welch’s research budget, Research Assistantships in the Aboriginal
Languages Laboratory and the Labrador Languages Preservation Laboratory, and
other faculty research projects, to bring the total funds to $20,000 per year
(MA) or $35,000/year (PhD).
For more information about our program, please visit the websites of the
Department of Linguistics and the Aboriginal Languages Research Laboratory.
