Meeting Description:
This year's ILA conference theme is: Indigenous Languages and Cultures of the
Americas, for which we are soliciting abstracts on all aspects of the
description, documentation, and decipherment of texts of pre-colonial
traditions. Papers are also invited on the sociolinguistic documentation and
revitalization efforts of the speech communities of aboriginal Canada, the US,
and Latin America. In keeping with the ILA tradition, we also invite
individual papers or posters on other areas of linguistics.
Topics may include (but are not limited to):
- Classification, structures, & typologies of indigenous languages
- Missionary linguistics, 16th century-present
- Endangered languages/cultures
- Bi/multilingualism & education
- Quechua/Aymara/other languages of the Andes
- Amazonian languages
- Mayan/Nahuatl languages
- Revitalization & language planning
- Cosmologies & glyphic symbolism
- Native American narrative
- Indigenous writing systems
- Language contact

Final Call for Papers:
Extended Deadline: February 16, 2020
Guidelines for Proposals:
Papers/Posters (25 min. including questions)
Required: paper or poster title & abstract (300-400 words excluding
references); summary abstract for the conference booklet (up to 150 words);
author's name, institutional affiliation, mailing address, & phone.
Workshops (3 hours):
Required: brief presentation/rationale of about 200 words should argue for the
relevance of the theoretical/applied content in language/linguistics/literacy
to be explored/examined. Include objectives, a brief description of session
activities, a maximum of 5 reading references, & a separate CV (100 words) of
workshop leader/s indicating relevant experience.
All proposals will be blind reviewed for quality & originality. Submissions
should contain new material & must not have been published previously. Send
proposals in a MSWord (.doc, .docx) file and using “ILA2020” in the subject
line, to Antoinette Jones, Conference Coordinator at netta.jones at ilaword.org
by Sunday, February 16, 2020. Notification of acceptances will be sent on or
before Sunday, March 8, 2020. The author(s) whose proposals have been accepted
must register by Sunday, March 15, the 2020 pre-registration deadline, to be
included in the Conference Program.
