Description:
PhD position at Leibniz-ZAS:
The Research Area Laboratory Phonology at Leibniz-ZAS in Berlin invites
applications for a three-year PhD position in the project Grammatical tinnitus
and its role in the perception of foreign language accent. A comparison of
German and Polish (GRANITUS) funded by by the German-Polish Science Foundation
(DPWS). It should ideally start on October 1, 2020. The remuneration is 1300
€/month (tax-free).
The project has the overarching goal of gaining more insight into the
perception processes of foreign language accents. It aims to show that
perception is not only based on the linguistic signal, but is a much more
complex phenomenon. It will examine factors that relate to (i) the signal,
(ii) the speaker, and (iii) the listener in the German-Polish context.
Of particular importance are the following questions:
Question 1: If both phonetic and grammatical features influence the perception
of foreign language accent, are there differences in their weighting? Are we
more sensitive to phonetic pecularities and do we turn a deaf ear to
grammatical mistakes?
Question 2: To what extent does the attitude of the listener towards the
speaker play a role in the perception of the foreign language accent? Does the
information about the speaker's origin also influence perception?
Question 3: What role does the linguistic background of the listener play in
the perception of the foreign language accent? Is there a difference between
mono- and multilingual listeners?
To answer these questions, a series of experiments is planned on perception
and event-related potentials (ERP).
The PhD thesis will be supervised by Dr Marzena Żygis PD (Leibniz ZAS, Berlin,
Germany) and Prof. Joanna Blaszczak (Uniwersytet Wroclawski, Poland).
Requirements:
The candidate should hold a Masterʼs degree in a relevant field (linguistics,
phonetics, psychology) or be close to completion. Knowledge in statistics is
desirable, as indeed are skills and potential for independent/self-motivated
work and experience in empirical research.
Please send your application including a letter of motivation, CV, copies of
academic certificates and the names of two potential referees and their email
addresses in a single pdf file to Marzena Żygis (zygis at leibniz-zas.de).
