Description:
There is a vacancy for a PhD position at the Department of Linguistic,
Literary and Aesthetic Studies, planned to start 1 August 2020 or by
agreement. The position is for a fixed-term period of 4 years. The position is
associated with the project Norwegian across the Americas: New Perspectives on
Heritage Languages, and is funded by the Research Council of Norway.
The project Norwegian across the Americas deals with the structural properties
(morphosyntax) of Norwegian as a heritage language. A heritage language is
acquired at home as a first language, but it is not a dominant language of the
larger (national) society. In recent years, heritage Norwegian as currently
spoken in North America (USA/Canada) has received considerable attention. The
project Norwegian across the Americas has two main objectives: One is to
extend the study of heritage Norwegian to an area in which the contact
language is not English, namely Latin America, where the contact language is
Spanish. The other objective is to provide new, diachronic perspectives on
heritage Norwegian in North America by making use of freshly transcribed and
tagged recordings from the first half of the 20th century.
The PhD project must be in the field of morphosyntax and relate to one or both
of the main project objectives. For more information about the project and
suggestions for specific research topics, see
https://www.uib.no/en/lle/134611/norwegian-across-americas. Applicants are
required to submit a description of their proposed PhD project (see further
details in the section How to apply,
https://www.jobbnorge.no/en/available-jobs/job/185083/phd-researcher-fellowshi
p).
Required qualifications and personal qualities:
- The applicant must hold a Norwegian master’s degree or the equivalent in
Linguistics, Language Studies or a related field. It is a condition of
employment that the master’s degree has been awarded at the time of
application. Applicants who do not have a Norwegian master’s degree will be
evaluated according to the regulations of the Norwegian Agency for Quality
Assurance in Education (NOKUT). The Department can send documentation of
foreign education to NOKUT in order to evaluate whether this degree is
equivalent to a Norwegian master’s degree.
- The applicant must be able to work independently in a well-structured way,
have good collaboration skills and be flexible
- The applicant must be proficient in both written and oral English
- The applicant must have sufficient knowledge of Norwegian to work on this
language at a scientific level
- The applicant must have a strong research interest in grammar and should be
familiar with/interested in formal approaches to language
In addition, the following qualities/skills will be considered an advantage:
- Experience with data collection (in particular, field work)
- Experience with data management
- Knowledge of Spanish
- Knowledge of/interest in morphosyntactic variation and diachronic change
In assessing the applications, both the academic quality of the project, and
the applicant’s qualifications will be considered.
In cases where ranked applicants have approximately equivalent qualifications,
strategic considerations, motivation and the applicant’s personal eligibility
will be taken into account.
