Meeting Description:
The 17th Conference on Laboratory Phonology will be held *virtually* on July
6-8, 2020. LabPhon17 is co-hosted by the University of British Columbia and
Simon Fraser University. The biennial Conference on Laboratory Phonology is
dedicated to the scientific study of all of the elements involved in spoken
language, its organization, and its function.
Not every speaker, community, or data point is at the peak of a distribution.
Many communities, individuals, and phenomena are on the tails. The theme of
LabPhon17 is on these tails, these empirical phonological phenomena that are
often understudied and overlooked in data collection and theoretical
frameworks. Our phonological theories need to be informed by these
understudied patterns, and we seek contributions to the conference that
address these patterns and populations that are often left on the margins.
Conference Announcement:
LabPhon 17 is virtual and ready to go! To learn about what to expect from the
virtual event, please go to
https://labphon.org/labphon17/virtual-conference-information, and to see the
list of presenters and the schedule, please go to
https://labphon.org/labphon17/detailed-programme.
Registration is open (https://labphon.org/labphon17/registration) and is free
to all LabPhon members in good standing as of July 6, 2020. Registration is
required for both presenters and those wishing to “attend” the conference
(i.e., have access to the pre-recorded scholarly materials and the Q&A
sessions).
Note that the Association for Laboratory Phonology has recently updated the
fee structure for membership to better serve interested parties around the
world (https://labphon.org/content/membership).
The conference organizers do also have some funds to help subsidize membership
fees and hence registrations; the application form is available here:
https://forms.gle/aELBKUNP4iXJoGSCA. This sponsorship is available to
individuals who do not have funding from their department, university, or
advisor/supervisor to pay for these dues. To maximize funds for those who need
them please only apply if this is your situation.
Information about how to access the uploaded materials and the live Q&A
sessions will be sent out only to registered attendees.
